State of Origin Retro Jerseys

Players are selected to represent the state in which they played their first senior rugby league, hence the name 'state of origin'. Prior to 1980 players were only selected for interstate matches on the basis of where they were playing their club football at the time. In both 1980 and 1981 there were two interstate matches under the old selection rules and one experimental "State of Origin" match. From 1982 onwards a best-of-three match series has been played around the middle of the rugby league season for the State of Origin shield. Since the inception of the series, total victories for each side were formerly extraordinarliy even, although in recent years Queensland has started to dominate, winning every series since 2006

The NSW State of Origin squad faces an enormous challenge in 2011 in facing the Queensland Maroons State of Origin side after the Queensland squad have won the last 5 series in a row. The NSW Blues State of Origin squad will be tremendously strengthened in 2011 with the addition of Dally M medal winner Todd Carney likely to be included in the squad and the possible inclusion of the Dragons star Mark Gasnier for the State of Origin series.

The NSW Blues will play two away games against the Queensland State of Origin team at Suncorp stadium in Brisbane. The NSW Blues State of Origin will be desparate to win the series and restore some much needed pride to the NSW Blues. The series wins for New Souths Wales and Queensland State of Origin series have been remarkably close prior to the last 5 years of domination from Queensland.

In 2011 a full time coach has been appointed to the squad in former Cronulla and Roosters coach Rickey Stewart. The NSW State of Origin squad has implemented the same structure as Queensland in 2011 as opposed to a Club coach in Craig Bellamy allowing complete focus on the NSW Blues State of Origin series.
