They strode onto the field Bill ‘The Phantom’ Lawry the lanky imperturbable left-hander – and Bob Simpson a stocky grand square cutter and good driver & they captained Australia a total of 25 times in their cricketing careers.  Facing the opening attack never fazed them.
In partnerships Simpson and Lawry: opened 62 innings scored 3596 runs lost only 3 wickets                                                                                                                  had a top score of 382 with an average of 60.95 scored 9 centuries and 18 half centuries
Bill Lawry was renowned for his exceptional powers of concentration his patience and tenacity.  As an opener he scored more runs and made more centuries than any other opening batsman to that time.  He made seven centuries against England four against the Windies and one each against India and South Africa. He took over the captaincy from Simpson during the 1967-68 tour of India and won the last two Tests for a 4-0 result.
Bob Simpson a man of strong convictions was the perfect partner for the dogged Lawry. A dependable right-handed opening batsman he was also a googly bowler and one of the finest slip fielders in cricket history. Interestingly when he became captain of Australia in 1964 he had never scored a Test match century. Finally in the 4th Test of his second tour of England in 1964 after he and Lawry scored 201 for the first wicket Simpson went on to score a brilliant 311 the highest score ever by an Aussie Test captain and the longest innings played against England 762 minutes. History had been written with Bobby Simpson the author.
