That boundary took the openers past the previous Australian record aggregate of 3887 runs – held by Mark Taylor and Michael Slater. That milestone in Mumbai gave Hayden and Langer a new challenge – the world record opening aggregate of 6482 runs set by West Indian greats Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes. Great friends off the field Hayden and Langer’s ‘double impact’ dominance at the top of the Australian order has dented reputations as quickly as they’ve taken the shine off new balls. The pair also extended their world record for double-century opening stands to six in 2004 – in the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Cairns on the 9th of July and in the same match they became the first openers from any country to score a century in the same innings on five occasions.
